Rules and Expectations

Classroom Expectations …

Our classroom behaviors and activities will comply with the following bullet points:

Respect – Treat everyone the way you’d like to be treated. Think before you DO or SPEAK. Be sure that anything you do and say would easily be classified as “respectful.”

  • Remain in your seat during class unless you are instructed to relocate.

  • Remain in your seat until I dismiss you at the end of class.

  • Please listen and refrain from talking while your classmate or your teacher is speaking.

  • Please avoid distracting behaviors. These behaviors include, but are not limited to, tapping feet, tapping desks with hands/pen/pencil, passing notes, deliberately distracting others, etc.

  • Treat ALL classmates with common courtesy. You’re an intelligent young person. Show some class and maturity by being polite to others. Mistreatment of other people will not be tolerated in this classroom.

  • IMPORTANT: The use of cell phones will not be tolerated in this classroom.

RESPONSIBILITY - YOU are responsible for YOUR actions. Being responsible encompasses a wide range of behaviors and actions.

  • Be on time for class. Being “on time” means you are in your seat AND ready to begin working.

  • Be prepared. Being prepared means you have all necessary materials with you, including assignments that are due. Not begin prepared hurts you, not me.

  • Take ownership of the required work. When you are absent from class, YOU are responsible for obtaining the missed work/missed information (including notes, worksheets, handouts, and important information that was provided).

  • Be ready to take a missed exam or quiz on the day you return. When you are absent on the day of an exam or a quiz is administered, you will be expected to complete that assessment on the first day you return.

React – Although I’m in charge, the spotlight shines on you – not me. React, reply, respond – get involved! Sometimes we’re afraid or uncomfortable about participating because we fear being “wrong.” We feel as though we should respond only if we’re 100% certain we know the answer. Please don’t drag that philosophy with you into this classroom. Discovering the right (or “best”) answer often requires stumbling across many of the wrong answers along the way. Thomas Edison “failed” about 2,000 times before inventing the light bulb. Do not be afraid to share your ideas! We can all learn something from them.

  • You have a pulse and an average body temperature of 98.6 degrees. Demonstrate that! Smile, look alive, participate in classroom discussions, and help make this classroom a fun and interesting place to be. Taking an active role in class helps ALL OF US become better readers, writers, and thinkers. Yes, it also makes the school day pass more quickly!

  • Complete the assigned work. Completing the assigned work certainly falls under the “Responsibility” column, but it also strongly affects the “React” aspect of the class. Students that complete the required work help make class more fun and interesting because they “bring something to the table.” Please be ready to infuse our classroom with your own personal flavor!
